PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The $116 million renovation, led by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), is a multi-faceted effort that includes several critical components:
-
Seismic Retrofit: A primary goal is to structurally fortify the building against earthquakes. The design involves creating a "building within a building" to meet current federal seismic safety standards, which is a complex task for a building originally constructed with unreinforced masonry.
-
Historic Preservation: The project places a strong emphasis on restoring the courthouse's original features.
-
Sustainable Upgrades: The renovation is a major push for sustainability. The project is targeting LEED Gold certification.
-
Modernization and Functionality: In addition to preservation, the project is transforming the interior into a modern workspace for several federal agencies, including the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. The goal is to move federal agencies out of expensive private leases and into this federally-owned property, saving taxpayer money.
