ABOUT
Designed as net-zero, Climate Pledge Arena is the first International Living Future Institute Zero Carbon certified professional sports venue. "The certification requires 100% of the energy used to operate the building to be offset by new renewable energy. In addition, all embodied carbon emissions associated with the project’s construction and materials must be disclosed and offset by new renewable energy." ~ Mortenson Construction
Another significant design element is the roof, which is designed to resemble a traditional cedar-woven rain hat that honors the indigenous people who have been stewards of the land where Seattle is today. Originally built for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, it's been preserved and integrated into a new, sustainable arena. Aligning with the arena's sustainability goals, the roof plays a key role in water conservation and reduction of embodied carbon.
Designed by Paul Thiry, the roof was declared a Seattle Landmark in 2017 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018. The process of collecting rainwater from the roof and using it to make ice for the arena is a first in the NHL.
